How PDF page numbers work
These steps mirror the workspace higher on this page. They are written as a numbered outline so readers, search engines, and assistants can restate the flow without guessing.
Upload an unprotected PDF
Choose a PDF from your device. Password-protected or corrupted files are rejected.
Choose format and start
Arabic prints 1, 2, 3. Roman prints i, ii, iii (up to 3999). Remaining pages after skipped covers begin at the starting number.
Place the stamp
Six slots: top or bottom, left, center, or right. Small, medium, or large follows the same size scale as Bates numbering.
Download
Skipped pages stay blank of numbers. Numbered pages get prefix plus the formatted value. Open the file to confirm the stamps sit in the margins.
When this page-numbers tool is the right choice
Built for briefs and manuals that need a simple page stamp—not Bates IDs and not Page X of Y.
Skip the cover
Leave the first N pages unnumbered. The rest start from the number you enter.
Arabic or Roman
Use 1, 2, 3 or lowercase i, ii, iii. Roman values stop at 3999.
Optional prefix
Add Page or another Latin label before the number. Empty is allowed.
Honest limits
Helvetica Latin/WinAnsi only. Stamps can cover content if the page has no margin. Not Page X of Y (use Header and footer) and not padded legal IDs (use Bates numbering).
Page numbers for PDF — FAQ
Scoped to this URL. For site-wide questions, use the homepage FAQ.
- Is this the same as Header and footer?
- No. Header and footer can print Page {page} of {pages} on every page. This tool prints one number (plus an optional prefix) and can skip leading pages or use Roman numerals.
- Is this the same as Bates numbering?
- No. Bates stamps a padded unique ID such as CASE-000001 on every page. This tool is a readable page number for books and briefs.
- Can I skip pages in the middle of the file?
- No. Skip applies only to a leading run of pages (the cover). There is no mid-document multi-select in this version.
- Are encrypted PDFs supported?
- No. Unlock the file first with Unlock PDF, then add page numbers here.
